CARNIVAL GUIDE 2026

The movement that can not be explained...

For many first-time visitors, the very first thing that comes to mind when they think about Rio Carnival is the iconic parade at the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí,  massive floats, dazzling costumes, and a level of spectacle that’s famous all over the world. And yes, it’s impressive. But that’s not really Rio’s Carnival.

The real Carnival happens out on the streets. Rio comes alive through its blocos de rua: joyful, open-air street parties that pop up all across the city. They’re free, spontaneous, and full of energy. Locals dance side by side with travelers, music echoes through entire neighborhoods, and suddenly everyone feels like part of the same celebration. If you want to truly experience Carnival like a Carioca, this is where it starts (and we cover the best blocos in detail in our dedicated street Carnival article).

When the sun goes down, another side of Carnival takes over,  especially within Rio’s LGBTQ+ and underground scene: The best National Parties with great music, and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that lasts until morning.

So while the Sambadrome shows you Carnival’s grand stage, the streets and nights show you the city's heart. Follow the drums, say yes to the unexpected, and let Rio surprise you: That’s when Carnival becomes unforgettable
